The Maitland River
(the river after which Maitland Bailey McKenzie was named)

While looking for information on the river in Western Ontario after which my grandfather was named I came across a cool paddling club website. The Virtual Voyageurs Canoe Club is already in the place we've talked about moving towards: a club that communicates entirely over the web and meets only to paddle.

I'd like to start an online conversation about the VVCC and their website. Please check out their website and let us know what you think, especially about their Upcoming Trips and Trip Reports pages. I'm not completely happy with our Calendar page and wonder what the rest of you would think about replacing it with something like the VVCC's Upcoming Trips Page (which, when lots of trips are scheduled, I suspect looks a lot like their Trip Reports page . . .).

I'm also interested in your opinions about continuing our movement in the direction of the Virtual Voyagers, that is, in becoming even more a a club that communicates entirely over the web and meets only to paddle.

Use the "Submit Followup" link below to join the conversation!

: Yes, yes, yes!

Chris - you found my personal vision of a nearly ideal paddling club. Archived trip reports and a handy calendar of upcoming events. This would keep all of the postings folks like Robin are doing in a Google accessible space.

The only other type of page i'd like to see here is something to do with Advocacy/conservation and other topics similar to Boatertalk.

Thanks

Rod

Thanks for the input Rod.

Are you suggesting we simplify what we have now? The Online Newsletter, which includes a trip report section, is Google accessible -- search for, say, "Upper Rocky Broad Beatdown" and you'll see what I mean! And of course we a calendar and both a conservation page and a conservation section of the online newsletter.

What sections would you reduce the Online Newsletter to?

Do you prefer the VVCC calendar to our own?

Chris, I only had a minute to view their website, but my first impression is I like the calendar format you have set up for scheduling trips. I like to look at a "month at a glance" setup like ours. I think we are moving toward an online management of the club, but I don't know if we should force the issue. If attendance at scheduled meetings and events (ie Christmas Party) falls off, then it would be a more natural progression. I'm still seeing a lot of trips posted on the listserve that are not showing up on the calendar, so we still need to get the word out. Overall, I think your layout of the club webpage feels more complete and seems easier to use than the online voyagers page (I think they should look at the job you've done) but I'll spend a little more time looking at it when we get back from Folly Is.

Site look funky?  Your browser is so old standards-based layouts and styling confuse it.  Consider updating.  Good options include:  Mozilla (Linux, Mac, Windows),  Mozilla Firefox (Linux, Mac, Windows),  Netscape v7 or higher (Linux, Mac, Windows),  Opera v7 or higher (Linux, Mac, Windows),  Galeon (Linux),  Konqueror (Linux),  Apple Safari (Mac),  Mozilla Camino (Mac),  Microsoft Internet Explorer v5 or higher (Mac),  Microsoft Internet Explorer v6 or higher (Windows).  All are free.  Because of security concerns I personally avoid Internet Explorer.  It may or may not be more buggy than its competitors, but its prominence and Microsoft's notoriety make it the most frequent target of malicious crackers.
