Introduction

The calendars below describe the "pulse releases" tentatively scheduled for the Coosa River below Jordan Dam in 2012.  Note that by passing your cursor over the colored calendar cells the release information will appear in a pop-up text window.

Except during droughts, the release from Jordan Dam is always at least 2,000 cfs.  This is a boatable (but low) flow.  From April to mid-June the minimum release is much higher -- from 3,000 to 4,000 cfs -- with daily pulse releases from 6,000 to 8,000 cfs between 9am & 3pm.  From mid-June to the end of October pulse releases occur every weekend from 11am to 5pm, with flows from 4,000 to 8,000 cfs (depending on the weekend).  Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day feature 10,0000 cfs flows between 10am & 6pm.  I've chosen to code only those days with releases of 4,000 cfs and above because these are the levels that are the most fun.  The details are fairly complicated; here's a link to the official Jordan Dam release schedule (note that these flows are subject to change).

Because the reservoir behind Jordan Dam has limited storage capacity, scheduled releases can be cancelled and/or reduced.  This is especially true late in the season, but can even occur early in the season during drought years.  Call to confirm flows!

Gage Information

For current and scheduled release levels, call the Alabama Power Reservoir Information System:  1-800-525-3711, then 4, 7, 2.  The current release is given in both the number of generators and cfs;  release forecasts are given in the number of generators (one generator => 2,000-5,000 cfs, two generators => 5,000-10,000 cfs, three generators => 10,000-15,000 cfs and four generators => 15,000-20,000 cfs).
