Introduction

The calendars below describe the "pulse releases" tentatively scheduled for the Coosa River below Jordan Dam in 2008.  Note that by passing your cursor over the colored calendar cells the release information will appear in a pop-up text window.

Warning!  I am waiting for confirmation of the 2008 schedule.  What you see below is inferred from the 2007 schedule!

This schedule is indeed tentative;  because the reservoir behind Jordan Dam has limited storage capacity late season boatable flows are frequently cancelled, and due to drought conditions, the 2007 Spring releases were significantly reduced from what they ordinarily would be.  The actual release schedule is quite complicated, with both "base" and "pulse" releases.  The base release is always at least 2,000 cfs;  ordinarily from April 1 to May 31 it is 4,000 cfs (cut back to 3,000 cfs in 2007);  from June 1 to June 30 it falls from 4,000 cfs to 2,000 cfs at the rate of 66.7 cfs per day (from 3,000 to 2,000 cfs between June 16 and 29 in 2007).  The minimum recreational pulse release is 4,000 cfs.

Gage Information

For current and scheduled release levels, call the Alabama Power Reservoir Information System:  1-800-525-3711, then 4, 7, 2.  The current release is given in both the number of generators and cfs;  release forecasts are given in the number of generators (one generator => 2,000-5,000 cfs, two generators => 5,000-10,000 cfs, three generators => 10,000-15,000 cfs and four generators => 15,000-20,000 cfs).  The Coosa can be run at 2,000 cfs but it is much more fun at 4,000 cfs.  I have chosen to color-code only those releases scheduled for 3,000 cfs and above.
