Introduction

The calendars below describe the "high flow events" tentatively scheduled for the Cheoah River below Santeetlah Dam in 2013.  Note that by passing your cursor over the colored calendar cells the release information will appear in a pop-up text window.  Under the terms the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) licence that allows Aloca to divert the Cheoah's waters, Alcoa is required to give 12 months notice of the high flow events they propose for the coming year.  Historically they have done so in January.  The high flow events described in the calendars below are those Aloca proposed to FERC in January 2012.  In their letter Aloca states that the proposed schedule was "developed on the basis of comments received from the agencies and other interested parties" at a meeting held in October 2011.  The reality is, however, that the number of days and release levels each month for the first five years of the license are set by the license;  what is on the table at the October meeting are the dates within the month the releases occur.  After agreeing on a proposed schedule Alcoa lists it on their website with the dates but neither the release times nor flows.  Here's the link: Alcoa's Cheoah release page.
